Hi there - I’m Sam and I’m the founder of Orby.
I’ve been working on people and organisation ‘stuff’ for the past 25-or-so years. If I had listened to my parents, I would have become a lawyer, but by the time I got to university, I was fascinated by subjects like history and politics, and seeing how people come together to create these complex social systems that we live and work in… so I skipped law and went to psychology instead. I believe that, as a place where so many of us spend so much of our time, organisations should be places where meaningful work can be delivered, communities can develop and people should feel like they can belong and contribute. And I am really passionate about setting up the architecture and culture of an organisation so that the right people can do the right work, in the right way.
But achieving this in real life takes a bit of work – and the job is never ‘finished’, even when you have a great organisation with amazing leaders. Things will always change, because the world we live in changes. So, how you tackle change needs to be smart, simple and sustainable…….
This is where Orby comes in. I’ve had the privilege of working with lots of different types of organisations – massive global ones, for-purpose ones, small teams and even the solo entrepreneurs who are trying to turn their ideas into a new business. I’ve been lucky enough to work on mergers, acquisitions, divestments, transformations, Human Resource process improvements - even those projects where the leadership team know something isn’t quite right, but need a hand to figure out what that ‘something’ is. And in all these projects, there’s been great people trying to make something better – but that’s sometimes made harder or slower because they aren’t sure what steps they should take to redesign, or how to structure their project properly or how to run a workshop to get to the outcomes they need.
My passion is in making sure you have the knowledge and space to make remarkable decisions for your organisation and that your leaders have the support to this – so that your business can become a place that people want to work. A place that people feel proud to work in. A place that is more than just a money-making machine. I believe that any business can change if it really wants to – it just takes the know-how and energy to tackle the right problems in the right way.
